INTRODUCTION: Supporting LGBTQ Families in Birth & Postpartum (WASHINGTON, D.C.)

This interactive workshop examines various birth settings and models of care that have historically included/excluded queer birth. We will discuss questions such as, what is the experience of birth like for members of the LGBTQ community and, how do we support this community in having empowering and healthy births? The topics included in this session are:

I. Definition of Terms
II. The Role of Non-Gestational Parents
III. Experience of Birth for Queer Families & Supporting LGBTQ Families in Birth*
IV. Becoming Queer Competent Health Care Providers
V. State/Federal Second-Parent Adoption Laws
VI. Birth Story Sharing & Reflections

This workshop is geared towards care providers who support families in birth (including but not limited to: birth & postpartum doulas, OBGYN's, Acupuncturists, Massage Therapists, Psychologists, Midwives, etc).
